An office worker was offered a promotion in which he would get much more money, work on the same floor of the same building, have a bigger office, a nicer desk and view, work with a lovely team and so forth. The promotion was offered because he was more than able for the new role. But he declined because he said he preferred his desk in the office, he felt settled in his job, he knew his way around, he had a nice routine and wanted to stay close to his friends. Each idea was reasonable, but may have masked the real reason for declining the promotion, namely that the uncertainty it would bring would have been intolerable. The smoke screen meant the worker never really got to grips with the underlying ideas that motivated him to avoid the risks and new experiences that came with the promotion.
